Doors Open provides a unique cultural and educational experience.

For one weekend each year, the doors of Winnipeg’s built treasures and cultural institutions are open to the public and visitors will have the opportunity to see what’s inside buildings and spaces they may not normally have access to, and explore their rich history completely free of charge.

Every year, over 400 engaged and passionate individuals volunteer to ensure that Winnipeggers have an opportunity to act as tourists in their own city. This year, we need you to be part of that team!

For anyone who enjoys dealing with the public, likes being active in the community, or has an interest in architecture or history, Doors Open Winnipeg has numerous opportunities for volunteers. We need ambassadors to represent buildings in this year’s event, in roles ranging from welcoming visitors to providing building tours and site interpretation.

Heritage Winnipeg is currently seeking qualified and interested individuals to volunteer during Doors Open Winnipeg's 12th annual event taking place on May 30 & 31, 2015.

Your support will help us:

  • Foster public awareness and understanding of our community's history and local architecture;
  • Encourage civic pride and active involvement in heritage conservative and development projects;
  • Showcase buildings and properties to potential developers, tenants and conservationists;
  • Recognize and celebrate those Winnipeg buildings which best exemplify the qualities and value of heritage
Opportunities are available in a wide-range of historical buildings and at a number of historical sites. If you love being active in your city and community, have an interest in architecture, history, heritage or city planning, enjoy dealing with the public, and care about Winnipeg, then we need you!

Responsibilities:

  • Must be able to volunteer either May 30 & 31, 2015 from 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
  • Act as an ambassador for Heritage Winnipeg, sharing the work we do and why we do it;
  • Encourage visitors to think more deeply about the role of the downtown, and city planning more generally, in the city of Winnipeg;
  • Greet visitors at assigned Doors Open site;
  • Ensure visitors do not enter secured areas of the building;
  • Assist in Tours of assigned building when applicable;
  • Distribute building information and Doors Open pamphlets;
  • Maintain a count of visitors to the building;
  • Distribute and collect Doors Open People's Choice Award ballots, as well as encouraging visitors to vote;

Experience and Skills:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Independent and able to work with limited supervision
  • Able to closely follow directions
  • Enthusiastic about Winnipeg’s built heritage, history, and architecture
  • Previous volunteer experience an asset

If you are interested in volunteering at Doors Open Winnipeg 2015, please fill out this volunteer form. Thanks to all of our volunteers who help make our event an overwhelming success each year!
